If I do it "off the shelf." That is, I make an image with my scanning 
back tethered to a Mac, burn a cd with it, and bring it to a PC, I 
see the image without the slightest difficulty.

I do not doubt that the Mac can be set in a way that will make your 
claim valid, but out of the box, it did what I needed it to do.

Since I have no "Mac formatted Firewire drive," I'll leave this test to 
others. 

I have learned an important lesson here - Shangara, if you say it's 
so, than I won't quarrel with you. From now on, if anybody asks 
me, you'll always be right.
