I use a laptop on location all the time, mainly for storing and viewing images after downloading from the cards. If abroad or away for several days I will also back the raw files to cd as well (belt and braces).
The laptop is also a great way to show clients / art directors the images as the shoot progresses...a slide show of images in i view can be very impressive.
In the studio I will often work tethered...it works a bit like a very large polaroid!

I think the type of work that you do will really determine if you need a laptop or not. If you are going to be working closely with clients / art directors etc or are going to be on location for any time (especially on foreign trips) then I would opt for a laptop. (with cd burner).
If you are carrying a lot of kit around and you don't need to critically view the images until you get back, then a portable storage system would work well.
I'm sure others may disagree but this set up has worked well for me for the last three years.
Hope this helps

Kind regards

Rob.
