The First Aid is only available for HFS and HFS+ formated devices. Most
pocket drives use the FAT or FAT32 formating to provide compatibility
with Windows OS computers. You might have an option to format your
pocket drive to HFS, but I would not recommend it.
Obviously, it remains a mystery why this suddenly happened, and I'd be
somewhat cautious to store data on this volume alone in future. (not
that I ever did)
Most likely, the pocket drive did need file directory repairs, it is
just that the Mac OS does not provide an option to repair FAT or FAT32
formated disks. If you took it to a Windows computer and ran ScanDisk
on it, most likely it would have repaired the problem and allowed you
to recover your data on the Macintosh.
There might be a third-party utility for the Mac that would allow you
to repair FAT and FAT32 formated devices.
