an update:

using PS6 in MacOS9.1 on G4. I know that this is all a bit stone age for
some, but I hate OSX and I've tried PS7 and it makes no difference. It has
all worked 'till now and so have never changed over.

Tried a few suggestions...

Perceptual rendering (what i was doing) is better than Relative Colorimetric
(which has darker green against which the anomaly shows up more).

Some more info:

Editing in Adobe 98, converting to (and here is where everyone will say the
nub of the matter is) Marrutt (new) ICC for 1290/Lyson inks/fine art
paper... but wait for it, I have put the Pixl test image through the printer
with it (the one with the lady with the grey buttox) and it comes out really
very well... no hint of the anomaly, smooth grey grads, no bands in the
colour fades etc, or any weirdness at all really. I have been lucky with
this one so far... and so have never seen the need for a handmade profile.
