I've been thinking about buying some dedicated interpolation software. I

I would be interested to hear if there are is any other interpolation software available and their relative merits.
Fred Miranda used to be popular with some using earlier versions of PS than the current. I used Fred Miranda's and thought it quite good for certain images, but not all. http://www.fredmiranda.com/software/
Nowadays PS CS produces excellent interpolation in 1 step (bicubic sharpner to res down, smoother to res up). Martin Evening commented on this a while ago - check the ProDig archives. The answer here would be for you to upgrade to PS CS.
Might also find something on http://www.luminous-landscape.com/. Lots of valuable info there.
