I bought a Sony G420 a couple of years ago and was very happy with it. It
has independent gun control. I suspect the whole "G" serias has.

However, I would never again buy a Sony monitor because I have found their
support to be absolutely appalling and unworthy of a professional outfit the
size of a pea, let alone the size of Sony.

Beware of rant up ahead! The monitor started to go fuzzy intermittently last
year. If I switched it off, let it cool and switched it on, I could work for
a few hours before it went mushy again. I called Sony and they collected it
and left me with a replacement. They returned mine after about a fortnight
and it worked flawlessly for a couple of months and then the same problem
reoccurred. I had them collect it again but they never got back back to me.
When I phoned, I was told it's ready for collection and when would I like it
back. I asked what the engineers had done. Support said it had been repaired
and was working OK. I asked again what the repairs were. He put me on hold,
came back and said they did not find a fault! I said it's definitely faulty
and it's the exact same fault as before. If they could find it before, why
can't they find it now? He said he could ask them to look at it again.

I waited another few weeks and had to chase them again. They assured me the
problem had been fixed but would not say what had been done. I received the
monitor. It worked fine for about a month and the problem occurred again. I
was furious. I phoned and had the problem "escalated" after much agro.
Anyone who knows me will tell you I am as cool as a cucumber, even under
great pressure but I did lose my cool with the run-around they were giving
me. I was told a supervisor would call me.

It took over a week to speak to the Supervisor (who had called but didn't
leave a message on my 24-hour answer machine!). She offered me a G520
replacement. I said I would try it and if I liked it I would accept it. It
arrived and I was put off immediately by the dents caused by a screwdriver
used to remove the casing. The driver was in a hurry to leave and took my
monitor back. I saw the driver's son lift my monitor and drop it onto the
van floor from chest height! I was horrified and said as much. The G420
monitor was now packed in a box that the G520 arrived in!

I told support the next day the monitor was unacceptable (also about the
driver dropping my monitor). It showed the same problem, only not so
amplified but there permanently instead of showing intermittently. They have
now had my monitor for about 7-8 weeks. I had to chase them again twice only
to find out they cannot find a fault! It looks like they have been burning
it continuously. Support arranged for an engineer to speak to me. He never
called! When I asked why no call, I was told the engineers didn't think it
was necessary! Not even a courtesy call to say as much.

I keep being fobbed off. I'm told I can have a replacement monitor but only
when they have one in stock. I asked them to refurbish mine but they won't.
At my insistence, the supervisor was supposed to get back to me over a week
ago and still hasn't. I gave them some more stick on Tuesday and was told
either an engineer or a supervisor would call me back. It's now Thursday!

All in all, appalling support. When I bought a Mitsubishi, the first model
had a problem. It was replaced with a NEW model within a week. My advice,
don't touch Sony with a bargepole. I was thinking of replacing my G420 with
a couple of Sony TFTs but no way now. I was also looking at a new Widescreen
TV recently but am giving all Sony products a wide berth, like enough to
swing a couple of oil tankers!
