You certainly shouldn't chastise yourself for being away from the
cutting edge. You have pictures to take and a living to earn.

My business model is based upon providing information and solutions to
my clients - information gained as a result of countless hours of
research. So that photographers such as yourself do not all have to
duplicate the same research. I went through the initial learning curve
myself a few years back, trying to get a decent screen/print match, and
I soon realised that keeping up with developments is a full time job.

For example, I was invited to speak about workflow (mainly input
issues) at the GATF colour conference last December in Arizona and
whilst listening to the press / prepress guys there I learned that the
US seems to be quite a way ahead of the UK in the adoption of printing
to standards. Printing to standards is a great idea as a job can then
go on any (well set up) press with similar results. Of course it
commoditizes press services but it also means that make up time is
reduced and client expectations are met more often (or so I'm told).

I was recently voted onto the US <Colormanagement Group>, and, with the
other 13 members I'm in the USA next month to spend a week on a press
with Terry Wyse, Terry is said to be the top US press optimization guy.
I'm really looking forward to finding out more about actual press
adjustment and setup. If it seems apt I'll perhaps do a write up on the
news page of my website.
