Their adherence to standards depends, of course, on how you were
proofing, (and to what standard) and if they adjusted to your proofs.
If your proofs were made using standard settings on your HP20 then they
were probably quite a way from an ISO web coated spec. However, as it
works for you I'm certainly not knocking it.
Many (perhaps most) photographers working for publications are are
producing work which will appear in a magazine among many other jobs,
there is very little chance for a printer to take the trouble to match a
photographer's proof in those circumstances.

and somewhat shameful if that's a true indicator of the current state
of affairs.
