Reminds me of submissions to a certain photo-library years ago, before they accepted digital: I had to do Epson prints of my digital files, obtained from 35mm, 6x7 to 5x4 mostly neg film, then re-photograph the prints onto 5x4 tranny, & submit these to the library which they would then scan themselves to convert back to digital files of about 50+MB!

The least rudimentary option here , if Ad insist on working with second and third generation data, is to obtain a film transparency from your digital data( using a film recorder or better technology) and then get a Drum Scan at specified sizs from that slide.
You have to explain your AD that this will in no way enhance what you have on the original file, you are just adding more pixels for larger image file purposes.

FInally, as the AD's have been for ever asking 4x5 sildes as a mattert-of-fact, ( i recall being asked images in that format that will end up printed smaller in size than the original film), then just ask what ECXATLY are those additinal uses he intend to print, because when going to larger printed sizes , resolution goes down, and most external billboards are printed with as low rsoltion as 12 to 36 dpi, (newer technogies requiring 75 and 240 dpi), so, unless you are not clearly instructed about this critical aspect, there is no reason to make unnecesary , and probably wrong ,decisions.

As previously stated by others, stick to your files till the very end.
