That is not strictly true. A ccd will give a better image direct from sensor but cmos output depends on the processing which is always necessary because of the low signal. So different systems really. A cmos is capable of excellent results as Canon and Kodak DCS owners will testify.
CCD= high quality straight from sensor BUT high power requirement and static charge attracts dust. High cost CMOS= High quality depending on processing. Low power requirement, low static, plus the sensor can support electronics that a ccd camera would need extra circuit boards for.
