I have seen many questions and comments about the DNG format but I do not
see it as a major undertaking or difficulty to implement. It is not
affecting the picture quality or features of the image.

Basically, a typical raw format, Nikon's NEF for example, is structured as a
TIF file. A tiff file has little pointers defining where the thumbnail is
stored, where the EXIF info is and where the actual data is located and how
big it is and so on. The format is very well defined. That is why a NEF
file's thumbnail can be seen in Windows' browser. The problem is that
different camera producers use different size data, 8bits, 12 bits,16 bits,
exif info and so on.

What Adobe presumably has done, and have the weight behind it to do, is to
create a standard format that all companies can reshuffle the data and drop
it into that pre-defined structure.

To Phase one, for example, it looks just like another raw file for them to
write a converter for, just like any other new camera format. But they only
have to do it once! As a further advantage, the format is well defined and
properly documented so their work will be easy compared to reverse
engineering some camera format.

What is not clear to me is the comment that I saw somewhere that they have
60 converters available to convert from different cameras to DNG. That
sounds like I could use my PS CS as a converter to get DNG files from the
Nikon D2H and then use them in Phase One C1 for example, if and when they
provide support for DNG. Hopefully, Nikon will have an option to save in
that format directly.
