Hi Bob As mentioned to the other Bob, from my experience, UK charities only want digital gear now. However, in my travels to Ghana and other developing nations, I have met several professional photographers who don't have a ghost of a chance of getting into digital, because of the expense, even at supposedly cut down rates for these countries. I am going out to West Africa next week on a four week shoot. I will investigate further what the position is at present. It could be that discarded darkroom kit here, would find a welcome home in such climates. As you probably know, in tropical regions it is a real problem keeping digital kit 'on song' and free of dust and moisture, even bringing all ones technical expertise to bear. Out there, there isn't the technical back-up that we expect as of right and are used to in the Western world. Hence, I believe the change to digital as we know it, will be somewhat slower there. There are still several E6 and C41 processing labs in Accra! On a lighter note: You can get 20 x 16 hand prints done for the price of a Boots 6 x 4 machine print! I haven't tried them, though! Pat and I personally support the education of two young boys at senior school in Ghana. There, education is not free after the age of eight, so only the fortunate and wealthy can continue with their studies. I think schools and colleges out there might be an avenue to investigate. A couple of my clients, do a lot in supporting education, medical and alternative livlihood projects for local communities. The problem that we have is in getting the gear over there and distributing it. However, where there is a will, there is a way!
