Are you certain the memory you bought is compatible with your computer?

Hi Fernand

Yes, the memory is compatible - and the memory in 'About this Mac' is now 4.5GB - and there is a discernible improvement (even in Photoshop); for example, in the past when using Carbon Copy Cloner to back up my main HD to an external disk it was almost impossible to use the computer, now it has no effect at all.

It is 'Activity Monitor' that monitors memory usage. The programs are using 1.27GB of memory (and that's only Photoshop, Safari, Mail, iView, iTunes, iCal, Toast and Address Book!), of which Photoshop, with no images open is using 622MB. This tallies with 'Active' in the list of memory used. Then 359.42MB is listed as being used by 'Wired' and '1.2GB' as 'Inactive', adding up to a total used of 2.8GB, leaving 'Free' memory at 1.71GB.

I will look at Apple's help centre later (there is no help file with Activity Monitor to explain this), but I'm sure what the 1.2GB 'inactive' memory is doing.

I never looked at Activity Monitor before I added 2GB of memory, but the fact that the system is allegedly using some of that new memory already (it claims to be using 2.8GB, including the 1.28GB inactive, and I only had 2.5GB before) at least seems to justify spending the cash on upgrading the memory.

If anyone understands OSX's use of memory (as well as Photoshop's), it would be great to understand what's going on!

Thanks again.
