Richard,

What I red on kb database, if I remember well, is the total memory used by program running is the sum of "Avtive" and "Inactive" (see KB).

Active is the amount of memory which is currently be red an write, "Inactive" is the memory which is not actually used but store the data easily and fast useable without need of disk cache access.

On My French soft there is a "Utilise" which I translate by "Used" and it's up to my available memory (included "Residente" memory.

There is also a panel which list the softs currently running, there you can check the amount used by each soft, and the size of the cache used by each soft.

In your case, depending of the task, the size of the picture, and the number of pictures opened, PS may store data in the cache or in memory, if the size of the picture and the cache size needed for PS to perform the task is lower than your former memory available, adding extra memory will not speed up the task you had checked.

What you might do will be to check document size/cache and total cache by clicking on the text window at the bottom left of an opened picture.

I must add that speed depend of the task performed and some task require less reading of the memory, and more processor speed. So you must test different task. One is more hardware ressource consuming for me is the "Lens Blur" filter set at his maximum.

At the very least you must try different tasks, with many pictures opened and check that the total amount of cache is bigger than the 2 GB PS is allowed to use.

Hope this address your concern.

Best regards.

It is 'Activity Monitor' that monitors memory usage. The programs are using 1.27GB of memory (and that's only Photoshop, Safari, Mail, iView, iTunes, iCal, Toast and Address Book!), of which Photoshop, with no images open is using 622MB. This tallies with 'Active' in the list of memory used. Then 359.42MB is listed as being used by 'Wired' and '1.2GB' as 'Inactive', adding up to a total used of 2.8GB, leaving 'Free' memory at 1.71GB.
