A further observation from an interested observer, who is not a
professional photographer, but somebody who employs digital
photography to produce paintings:

To generalise greatly, threads about PS7, PS CS, colour printing and
monitors, are to me, advanced and informative, and contain cutting
edge information.

Threads to do with operating systems, hard disk drives, and how to
make produce (c) symbols, while interesting might treated with disdain
on a Windows or Mac site.

As a result I would think twice about asking a basic photoshop
question, but not a basic
windows question.

This is not a criticism of the list - just inevitable - you are
professional manipulators of digital images - you have that knowledge
in common, or else presumably you would soon fail to be
"professional". But through nobody's fault, you have varying knowlege
about computers.

A similar debate in traditional photography might be, how much does
the practitioner have to know about the chemistry of the processes he
or she uses.
