Of the dozen or so lists I belong to, a couple are Yahoogroups lists. I'm not suggesting that this is the ultimate or best list type, but I can't help noticing a couple of things: if I post a reply to these lists, I receive the 'list version' of my reply back within five minutes. Possible quicker, as I only have my email application check mail every five minutes. I'd guess it's almost instantaneous. Also, I've never seen the effect we seem to get so often on PRODIG where we get a day or so when some messages come through six or more times in a row, indentically.
