With regard to noise, I have not seen the results from the 54m but
essentially it should be very similar to the 54s which does display noise in
the shadows at exposures of 1sec. Temperature will definitely play a part
and working for prolonged times in hot conditions will increase the noise.
I have been told that Captureshop 5 (which I assume you are using as the 54m
isn't supported in earlier versions) has software issues in relation to
noise on the 54m. I have shot 54 single shots on both 4.1 and 5 and not
noticed a particular difference but this has not been thorough by any
means.. Go back to the supplier and ask for more info.
With regard to the colour calibration, the sinar supplied "calibrations" are
generic and will not offer the best possible results. To use them you will
need to grey balance using the colorpicker on a grey object in a captured
preview, when happy with the result hold the alt key to preserve the grey
balance for future captures. Reneutralisation via this process through the
day should maintain a consistent grey.
A more accurate solution is to take an image of the macbeth colour chart 24
patch or DC (sinar seem to have omitted support for the preferred SG chart).
The procedure for doing this is under- capture> calibrate colors. Don't
overexpose the chart and try to ensure that it's evenly lit. This
calibration can then be saved and utilised via the same process as using the
generic calibrations... Although you will still have to neutralise to find
the correct grey point when shooting with a changed colour temperature. It
might be worthwhile to create a set of calibrations to be utilised at
different times of the day/weather conditions.....
Rolls Royce approach will involve bespoke camera profiling, done in addition
to calibration this will involve the creation of an input icc profile...
Whether and how well this works I don't know.. It certainly is on my list of
things to test and will be looked at properly now CS5 is out for real (this
function is only supported in the latest release). Others on this list will
have direct info on this, which I'm sure will give some help as to whether
it's appropriate, it is expensive... To set this up is going to be a least
2500 if you're starting from scratch..
Good luck, let us know how you get on,

Andy
