After getting my Epson 2200 I determined the approximate cost of ink.

Using a balance with a precision of 0.1 gram, I weighed each of six or so
new ink cartridges before installing them in the printer and again when they
were exhausted. I got values of about 10 to 13 grams of usable ink per
cartridge. A figure of 12 grams per cartridge (regardless of color) is
probably close.

I then removed all seven cartridges and measured their total weight. After
reinstalling them, I printed a 12x12 image on Epson matte paper using the
highest quality settings. I removed and weighed the set of cartridges again
and found I had used a total of 3.7 grams of ink for 144 square inches.

Therefore my rough estimate is 0.026 g ink per square inch.

I pay approximately $ 9.95 (US) per cartridge plus a little more for
shipping. That comes to roughly $ 0.83 per gram of ink.

A 12x12 in print therefore comes to about $ 3.10 for ink alone.
