I must report a significant error I made in the study I reported below.

As I described, I removed all 7 cartridges, determined their total weight,
reinstalled them, and made a print. I then removed them again and
redetermined their total weight.

I thought about it again this weekend and came to the realization that there
was a major flaw in my reasoning.

When I reinstalled the 7 cartridges prior to making the test print, the
printer used some of the ink to flush the lines--so not all of the ink that
was used was consumed in making the print.

To determine the magnitude of this error, I did the following.

I determined the total weight all 7 cartridges and reinstalled them in the
printer.
I printed just a few text characters (negligable ink usage) to be sure the
printer was again fully functional.
I removed the cartridges again and reweighed them.

I found the ink usage to be 1.9 g.

Therefore, of the 3.7 g of ink that I erroneously reported was used to make
the test print, actually only about 1.8 g was used.

This would make the ink cost for my 12 x 12 in print about $ 1.49 (US)
rather than $ 3.11.

I apologize to all for this error.

Subject: [PRODIG] Cost of Epson 2200 ink

After getting my Epson 2200 I determined the approximate cost of ink.

Using a balance with a precision of 0.1 gram, I weighed each of six or so
new ink cartridges before installing them in the printer and again when they
were exhausted. I got values of about 10 to 13 grams of usable ink per
cartridge. A figure of 12 grams per cartridge (regardless of color) is
probably close.

I then removed all seven cartridges and measured their total weight. After
reinstalling them, I printed a 12x12 image on Epson matte paper using the
highest quality settings. I removed and weighed the set of cartridges again
and found I had used a total of 3.7 grams of ink for 144 square inches.

Therefore my rough estimate is 0.026 g ink per square inch.

I pay approximately $ 9.95 (US) per cartridge plus a little more for
shipping. That comes to roughly $ 0.83 per gram of ink.

A 12x12 in print therefore comes to about $ 3.10 for ink alone.
