I had exactly the same thing happen to my Lacie Big Disk and was told by other computer gurus that I should never use an external hard drive that big. 250 GB seems to be the limit and even though the Lacie 500 is actually 2 disks, it is functioning as one. I was able to restore everything with Digital Image Recovery. I reformatted the Big Disk and I've continued to use it and have had no problems but now I back everything up on Retrospect every night.
I don't know why it failed but it's been working fine for several months now. I just don't trust it anymore and don't put anything on it that can't be restored quickly.
