Having been shooting RAW using a D60 for some time, I found the continuous
file numbering system (xxx-XXXX) ideal for uniquely identifying an image to
a client. I'm now using a 20D but find the continuous file numbering system
now operates differently, and (to my mind) somewhat illogically. The
on-camera info screen shows a similar file number format to what I've been
used to on the D60 but when processed using Canon's DPP software, the number
changes to "_MG-XXXX". Not sure if this is a quirk of the Canon DPP program
or the way I'm using it. Has anyone found a work-around for this or know of
any other software that can be used to process the .CR2 RAW image files
whilst preserving the original file number?

Which version are you using? I did some testing with DPP v 1.0 and if you chose Save to Photoshop the program would replace the original file name and generate a new random alpha digit number each and every time you did so. And according to someone who spoke to someone from Canon, I hear this really was 'as designed'. I am not sure why anyone would want to do that though! There is a new version of the software out which I will be testing soon when I review the new EOS 1Ds MkII. My hopes are not high that it will be any faster that the last version.
