For any who were intrigued by this problem, I wanted to update:

It appears that (after switching monitors, getting new drivers for
graphics card, new graphics card etc.) the problem lay in the fact
that I was using version 4.1 of the GM software, Profilemaker Pro. I
didn't realise that I was using this older version.

The scary thing is that using 4.1, I was unable to get a monitor
calibration to have a low enough black point without changing
settings considerably, which I never did. This is done with no
problem at all with 4.1.5, and the calibration checks out just fine.
I can only assume that all the monitor profiling I did prior to
version 4.1.5 had waaaay too high a black point. I was not
experienced enough to realise the problem, and did not know then how
to check this. (Thanks Bruce et all in RealWorld Color Management.)

Now back to work.
