Hello, I recently had some thoughts about a new translation concept for Plone. I've checked out LinguaPlone, but it didn't fulfill my needs.
Why? ==== The scenario looks like this: We have site with lots of content and we want visitors from foreign countries to get in touch as best. But we ever don’t have capacity to translate all content into all different languages. So we’ll just translate the main pages, e.g. the welcome page and some more. I figured out that using LinugaPlone means to re-enter the whole site content for each language I want to add – otherwise the un-translated parts won’t be shown - correct me if I’m wrong. Concept ======= The concept could be described as “Translations on Demand”. This meas you may add a translation for any part of your content if you’d like to. The system checks if translated content is available for the visitors preferred language. If not, the canonical version of content will be used. The idea is to solve this on field-level. Compare: LinguaPlone uses object-Level. Each field of a content type may get an attribute like “translation = [ True|False ]”. True means the field will be automatically available for any specified language. Empty field content means: not yet translated, show canonical version. History function could be eventually be used to determine and remind about outdated translations. User Interface ============== The new editing feature could be integrated quite seamlessly into the existing interface. See this screen for my ideas about UI. http://img39.imageshack.us/img39/7546/plonetranlateondemand.png Technical Part ============== I think there would be several ways to implement it, surely the idea is not to rewrite each type but using a more general kind of extension concept. Archetypes Schema extender may be starting point for a quick try, but probably not the final way for solution. I intend to make use of Dexterity types more and more in future and it would nice if this “multilingual-field-concept” could be adapted here – as there is currently no support for languages in Dexterity. Did anyone of you already see a product like this? Anybody else could see benefits?
