These advantages of
diesel and biodiesel result in between 20% to 40% greater mpg in the
diesel auto, than its equivalent gasoline auto.

Only to a trained conservative driver. My son is more of the "I have to
step on a peddle as long as it's moving" type of driver. So he hits the
gas, then the breaks, then the gas,.....

If you know how to coast you can get those savings, but most people
drive poorly from an economic POV. Just put a vacuum meter on the dash
and let people see the needle drop to 0 all the time they are driving.

You can add to the above advantages, that a diesel engine will burn
about any fuel, so biodiesel, as an alternative fuel to petrol diesel,
looks very attractive. Of course, it will take a combination of
conservation measure, coupled with a combination of alternative energys,
to meet all our demands for energy. We can succeed, if we are willing
to work on balancing both the demand and the supply side of the equation.

We really have to work on the less is better for us all side of the
equation. Conservation is something that the USA just doesn't
understand. As pioneers of the "I want it ALL", or the "One with the
most toys wins" lifestyles we are hard pressed to back off and use
less. Let alone something as barbaric as say,,,,, mass transit!

I think it will take a holistic approach to meet our energy needs. We can't, at this point, target a single technology, and then have everyone focus on moving to that single solution. That would be the Microsoft's approach to the problem, I'm sure <g>, but I think we will need to develop energy choices, and then let the consumers decided, based on supply and demand pricing, as to where the country will move towards findiing energy independence.
