up to that from the clients.

Which will work as long as the client has contact with the server, which it may not. I do get unexplained VFP Error 1 "File does not exist" at unpredictable times. This may be due to the dreaded Windows mapped-drive time-out problem, or because the user is shutting down Windows at the same time as my application. In the former case, it won't see the server; in the latter it may also not have an internet connection.

I can do this stuff but considering the amount of error trapping and other overhead involved, after which it's not guaranteed to work 100% of the time when I need it, it just doesn't seem like there's much benefit for the cost.

As I said, I like the idea in principle but in practice...
