Thanks, Jeff and Richard, for your replies. This is a vertical niche app, so we're conservative about making changes that would require reconfiguration or new dependencies on external software at multiple sites. Invariably, we find incompatibilities and extra costs associated with the changes.
Luckily, at this point, we're outputting as a report output format and don't need to do import. We have both CSV for flat tabular output and a couple of specialized reports using Automation; it's these last that aren't working. New info: they are running Office 2007 on a Windows 8 laptop.
