Sorry but that sounds so wrong.  The container can tweak sorts right?  Will
the underlying cursor be bent the same way?

I would only stick to what the control says and never go off to separate
data.  IMO having had users sort grids all the time.

Can't you get from ActiveRow an array for the columns either by name or
number?
