The whole problem is that Windows 8 changed my local account to a
Microsoft account because Techsmith bought into their state of the art
software delivery system called the Windows App Store. Genious! I
basically backed up my profile, deleted all accounts except the admin,
created a new local account, copied the contents of my profile into the new
profile. I still had to reconfigure a whole bunch of stuff, but I am back
to where I was yesterday.

If this ever happens to you or anyone you know, just open up accounts and
there is a button, "change to local account."

What's amatta for these guys?

Pure WAG here but the installer saw you had NO security defined on your box
and knew to fix that.

Reads like you put it back to the simplistic environment you had before.
Next time you get software from the Win-Store you may have to re break
your environment again.

Steve: I have complete security on that box only it is set up without using Windows accounts. Why is having a local account and not using a home group simplistic and lacking in security in your opinion? I have Macs, Linux and Windows machines on my network. Why would I want "Windows to manage my network" especially when I have no idea what that means.
