McNamara => Clifford == Rumsfeld => Gates
It was the dismissing of McNamara and his insistence on escalating
the Vietnam war that finally got the mindset changed. Clifford was
generally considered a hawk, but he was realistic enough to realize
very quickly that McNamara had royally screwed the pooch, and did not
hesitate to reverse course. I'm hoping that Gates is bold enough to
do the same.
