If you can stretch to about 40 quid you could get this:
http://www.verypdf.com/app/pdf-to-image-converter/index.html
... and convert the PDFs to image files, either in bulk or on the fly.
Then just display the thumbnail image. Why not just fire up Adobe Reader to
view them?
