Virgil,

I don't know about you, but I don't think the insurgents had a TANK on that
roof.

Perhaps the insurgent were using small-arms, perhaps even some RPG-7. You
could try to use similar firepower to kill them. Perhaps you could use some
snipers (I read every army unit has snipers nowadays, you know, URBAN
COMBAT).

On the other hand sure you could completely disregard human life and fire
TANK ROUNDS on the house. "Damn they're all savages", right?

Probably you didn't watch that video Iraq: The Hidden Story, but they showed
a US Army Kiowa helicopter firing on a civilian crowd which had gathered
near a wrecked US armored vehicle. War situation? Yes. Combat situation? No.

In Somalia (yeah, read about the events leading to the "Blackhawk down"
story ), the US forces wanted to nail a local warchief/leader. Intelligence
showed he would participate in a meeting in a certain building. But it was
a local community meeting where most of the people would be civilians, local
leaders, etc. What did the US military do? They fired missiles on the
building, killing and maiming many people, before a Delta Team went in to
grab the guy if alive. You see? Want to grab or kill a CRIMINAL but kill
innocents in the process, showing complete disregard for human life. No
wonder local people started to hate americans by that time (US Marines had
been there before and reportedly were well liked by local population). War
situation? Hmm, yeah, probably. Combat situation? No.
This incident was told in the "Blackhawk Down" book, which is not an
anti-american book, on the contrary (an excellent reading by the way).

There's a hilarious scene in the satire movie "Team America World Police"
where the good guys destroy all Paris while trying to stop terrorists. Then
they wonder why the local population hates then. While the movie is
ridiculous (and outrageously funny), I bet those movie makers are not simple
minded guys.
