Any chance of changing it to be record based, instead of file based?  
i.e. (pronounced "AAIIIIEEEE!!!") add a record when Tom logs in, Add a 
record when Sue logs in, Delete the Tom record when Tom logs out, etc, 
etc.? (etc pronounced like a dog choking)
