For the record, that was originally from the At Last the 1948 Show, 
which included some Pythons, but it's not actually a Python bit, 
although it's often credited to them. Eric Idle explained all this 
before performing the sketch on his Greedy Bastard Tour.

And I remember using paper tape on an ASR-33 teletype as a storage 
mechanism in the early '70s before moving on to punch cards. It all 
made VT-100s seem incredibly user friendly.
