Al,
Definitely sounds like a video problem. Have you tried slowing down the
Hardware acceleration of the card? In display properties select the advanced
tab and on the Troubleshoot tab you can set hardware acceleration down to
"None" from the "Full" default setting.

No its XP.
In the properties box I can make the screen visible and !visible and it
goes.
I also have the desktop alerts running plus the statusbar. It might be the
status bar that causes the problem

Vista I assume? I have had no problems with XP with themed controls but have
seen this in my testing with Vista and the problem disappeared when I
updated the nVidea drivers once they finally became available.
