Wow, no UPS and auto-shutdown? Or the UPS batteries (or UPS units
themselves) have not been changed out every 2 years or so to prevent loss of
reserve capacity? Yikes! No transaction log file to record changes?
Double yikes!

Lessons sometimes need to be relearned by ownership and management in order
to spark a little preventive investment. How many times I have heard
business owners say (in so many words), "We don't get power outages very
often. I do not think I want to get a battery backup, sounds like a waste
of money for the few times we used to lose power."

For one client in S California I actually went out and paid for a nice UPS
and external hard drive for a client out of my own pocket. Why? If he
loses data, and renders my software useless, I lose my revenue stream. So
to help ensure I keep getting $560/month recurring license fees I invested
about $350 (tax deductible, so really only about $200). It has paid off, as
he has had no fewer than 3 power outages since that time, and not one bit of
data loss occurred. I rag him every time I see him about the "poor
investment" I made on his behalf.

I have lost several records from an open table when we had a power failure.
Unfortunately they were records of foreign exchange deals worth several
billion US dollars; fortunately the traders could remember the details of
the trades including the rates to 4 decimal places! What made matters worse
was the fact that the mirroring software the bank used was so efficient it
had mirrored the corrupt database before we could do anything <g>. Such is
life!
