If it breaks when you do that, consider not doing that.

Rather than backing up the running files, use a VFP program to scan
through a list of all of the DBFs, execute a USE AGAIN NOUPDATE and
COPY the contents to a target table which you then close. Then backup
the target. As long as you don't have tables opened exclusively or
transactions in effect during the backup, that should do the trick.

Bonus points if you eliminate deleted records and write the new table
in sorted order.
