I have been using SyncBack for a few years now, mostly to do disk-to-disk
backups. It supports M$ Virtual Shadow-Copy service (VSS) with XP, 2003
Server, and I bet 2008 Server. But, VSS only works on local drives with
NTFS partition. Also, check Services to make certain VSS is set to
automatic and running. With VSS running I am able to back up open files
using SyncBack. www.syncback.com. I think it is $30 per machine for
license, includes free updates, and for non-business machines you can use a
single license for up to 5 PCs. I use it for workstation as well as Server
class M$ platforms. Easy to set up, and it does have an option to compress
files and directories, and to copy to ftp locations.
