The Economist reported that blue-eyes began about 6000 years ago from a village in Europe. The gene that causes blue eyes was a mutation in a female parent. A more fully defect in this gene causes albinism. But when that gene is only partially defective it leads to blue eyes. A marker on this gene is what was used to trace the ancestry of blue eyes backwards.
