All sports are judged. That's how you get penalties in hockey and football,
free throws in basketball, and a 'walk' in baseball. The only variation is
how much judging is combined with how much direct competition.

Recall, for example, that a large portion of the track & field events are
scored rather than having direct competition. Even in those cases where
runners are directly competing with other runners, their scores (or times)
are compared rather than just their position on the track.

All of life requires a judge. Sports are no different. It is a matter of
degree.
