I'll go out on a limb and say that your half right here. I see it as a total Machiavellian POV where power corrupts people and the only way the leaders can stay in the limelight is the keep control of their flock. From the black elected to the leaders of local churches it is all a very similar game plan. Finding a replacement leader is going to be tough.
