Using IIS you can install a free smtp server on your local pc/ laptop. 
There are many other free smtp servers you can install also..
ps. I have used blat with gmail, use it actaully every hour or so to monitor 
some sites for customers , when the sites fail, I get an email, and sms to 
my phone thanks to blat..

I use a very very simple vfp wrapper for blat I detailed out here.

uses text-endtext to merge the blat command line..
