The office I'm thinking of converting to gigabit has all new computers, so they
already have gigabit cards in them. There are a few computers with 100 megabit
cards, and a few notebooks with 100 megabit cards. I'm thinking of using the
USB adapters only for the laptops and get some inexpensive gigabit cards for
the other computers.

Right now I'm not sure the expense is worth it for any of this. The only slow
throughput we have is when reindexing databases or running some SQL selects
from the NAS which we are using as the data server now. The reindexing is only
for emergencies and the SQL selects are only for month-end processing.
