Hello Pete, I'm using MEPIS as well but I'm on 6.5. I was waiting on 8 to come out before upgrading. It's out now, and now I'm waiting on a pause in work to do the upgrade.
MEPIS is ultimately built on top of a Debian system so you would want to use the DEB package.
