You can also use the Advantage ODBC driver with VFP 9 DBCs (not limited to VFP 6 feature set like native VFP ODBC drive is).
ODBC driver is part of the local engine and is free. The big advantages to their database include using the same DBFs you are using today (no migration to a new database server), you can hide them from prying eyes behind the server (no user access with Excel or copying files to a memory stick and walking out the door), online backups, and breaking the 2GB limit. Yes, your app does access the data via backend server techniques (remote views, cursoradapters, SQL passthrough) so your app has to change if you are not doing things the client-server way. The Advantage team at Sybase reminds me of the Fox Team in many ways. They are bright, small and agile, create cool products, and support the Fox Community. I am pretty confident they will be at Southwest Fox again this year. I thought it would be worth forwarding this to y'all. For me, PostgreSQL is doing a fine job. But I am not in a position where I am prohibited from using Open Source solutions by a client or employer either <g>. I have an earlier license for ADS (from a client who stopped using it because it was "too hard" compared to Access), but I never felt the need to play with it. An ADS license retails for I think $2,500 for 10 users (YMMV <g>), so it is not a low cost solution when compared to PostgreSQL, Firebird, or MySQL for free. But it is certainly far less costly than "non-Express" MS SQL Server or Oracle (I have not priced those for a while, but they are much more than $2,500 for 10 users), and they do have some interesting info if you look at the link(s) provided below. It scales far beyond the SQL Server Express 4Gb database size limit, which may be attractive to some folks. And it looks like it is fairly easy to setup and administer. Ciao! I am under the impression that your company has developed and resells applications that use Visual FoxPro . ADS now has an offering in the VFP market and we are reaching out to find out what the development community is looking for in a database product. We are very excited about the possibilities of this new market for us. If you have any applications that could benefit from a client/server database, please keep ADS in mind. I've included a link below to information related to our product and VFP. Please feel free to call or email with any questions and I look forward to hearing from you. Any feedback you have would be appreciated. Here are a few bullet points that might interest you and/or your developers. * Support for large DBF tables (over 2GB) * A natural migration path for new applications using Visual Studio * ODBC access to VFP 9 Data Types * Internet access to DBF tables * Direct table access in ADO.NET * Full Text Search * Table, index, memo and communication encryption * The ability to hide DBF tables * Online backup * Replication http://www.sybase.com/products/databasemanagement/advantagedatabaseserver/ge ttingstarted-foxpro Best Regards, Phil _____ Phil Ruebel | Sybase iAnywhere | 208.287.6032 | fax 208.327.5004 | phil.rue...@ianywhere.com | <http://www.ianywhere.com/> www.ianywhere.com _____ --- StripMime Report -- processed MIME parts --- multipart/alternative text/plain (text body -- kept) text/html --- [excessive quoting removed by server] _______________________________________________ Post Messages to: ProFox@leafe.com Subscription Maintenance: http://leafe.com/mailman/listinfo/profox OT-free version of this list: http://leafe.com/mailman/listinfo/profoxtech Searchable Archive: http://leafe.com/archives/search/profox This message: http://leafe.com/archives/byMID/profox/00ed01c9bf88$26fde240$74f9a6...@com ** All postings, unless explicitly stated otherwise, are the opinions of the author, and do not constitute legal or medical advice.
