Try installing PostgresSQL on Ubuntu (for example) and you'll see that
you're actually not badly off with what you get with SQL Server ...

Well, it worked fine on my Win 7 64-bit - are you on Windows 32 or 64
and are you installing SQL Server 32 or 64 ?
