You have discovered the closely guarded secret that Vista is crap. Windows ME might be worse, but it is a toss up.

Then again, I also have XP, Vista, and Win7 virtual machines running on my MacBook, and I only rarely have to reboot them. I have a hunch the virtual hardware layer adds some needed insulation or something. But perhaps the difference is that I installed each of those virtual systems from scratch from the install DVD's, while that Vista laptop came configured off the shelf already and also runs a bunch of HP crapware that I haven't bothered to sort out and disable yet. My Mac and Ubuntu installations always work well right out of the box. Windows requires all kinds of turning this and that off until it can be relied upon.
