If you are connected to the internet, there are many threats that can
target you in ways not involving email. Here are some:
Statefull Packet Inspection (SPI) drops malformed packets
DoS attacks, (eg Denial of Service) including:
Syn flood
ICMP flood
UDP flood
ping of death
IP spoofing
land attack
tear drop attack
IP address sweep attack
Win Nuke attack
Intruders, (eg intrusion detection needed)
Robot takeovers
spyware
Viruses, like worms, etc
Port scanning to find potential entry points
Then there are the ever present email booms, spams, malware, spyware.
It really takes a comprehensive approach to combat all the many threats
to secure today, but UTM is probably overkill and to expensive for most
situations.
