Interesting point 
I guess why would someone run a leeching program which made 366,000 calls to 
the website and downloaded 28gb of information.
 
They also downloaded product images and schematics.
 
The most logical answer is to use the information elsewhere.
 
I've blocked the leech IPs, watermarked all images and hidden some bad data in 
the files. At least if the leeching starts again it may be possible to find the 
site.

How is it that they are a thief, if they grabbed publicly-available documents 
off
your client's website?

How do you know they plan nefarious things with the data they "stole"?
