suppose I could make a cover verb in my profile, but that seems
silly/clumsy.

Does this work for you if you set these values in your session?
If not, that's one kind of problem, and perhaps unique to your setup
or some other kind of error.
If it works in your session but not in your profile, you might try
setting a latent expression to do your settings when they keyboard
unlocks.
