Purists may object to the number representation in the 16x16 puzzle, in
the generalisation I've just posted;
numbers 1-16 are encoded as 1-g ! Clearly they could be "better" as
0-f. I don't know which is preferable!
I normally stick to a numeric output, involving no encoding.
